Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan was born in Kabba, currently known as Kogi State on January 29, 1944. He completed his Primary Education at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Kabba before proceeding to Mount St. Michael’s Secondary School in Aliade, Benue State.
Upon completing Secondary School, he proceeded to Sts. Peter and Paul Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan, where he joined the Catholic School of Theology before continuing his priestly formation in Rome.
There, he earned a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute and later obtained a doctorate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Urban University.
Priesthood and Rise in the Catholic Church
After years of active schooling, on August 3, 1969, Cardinal Onaiyekan was successfully ordained a Catholic priest.
In 1982, after serving as a teacher and seminary rector, the late Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Ilorin. He later succeeded his superior and became the Bishop of Ilorin in 1984 before being appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Abuja in 1990.
In 1994, he became the first Archbishop of Abuja after it was elevated to an Archdiocese. His administration as an Archbishop was heavily centered on promoting peace, unity and religious harmony among Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, while also strengthening the Catholic Church.
